Politicians sometimes refer to e.g. parliament buildings as "hallowed halls" or something along that line.

They do preach in those buildings, which are not seldom rather grandiose.

They treat some persons as prophets.

They have ceremonies, sometimes intricate. Civic religion.

So by trying to sanctify their temples, do they admit it has become a den of thieves? Or "robbers" as Matthew 21:12 is sometimes translated.
