Cranes

Long time no write here. By far the biggest break on my blog ever.
Blather == null.
Now I found my keyboard 😛

I've written about cranes (Grus grus) many times here. About one and half week ago, I had a window slightly open, and heard cranes honk honk. Went to my balcony, opened door and saw two of them going south. I may have heard cranes this autumn, but if so, very few. And when I hear them from my apartment, I usually can't spot them as there are tall trees and also some six story buildings near. And if they fly low they pass quickly. So I was lucky this time. The sky was grey soup, and there was a drizzle, and it was cold, so I really felt sorry for the crane couple.

Mid November is late for cranes going south. In spring they gather for and there are thousands at certain lakes. In autumn they are also counted, but they never gather that big. I checked the usual counting place, and they had stopped mid October, with a count of seven! So, this was very late. Twice in days after, I heard again, but did not manage to spot them.

This was weird. I read up on cranes migration autumn 2025, and apparently in continental Europe, many cranes have died from bird flu. 🙁 Did these stragglers hear about it and waited as long as possible to go south? 😉

I checked my previous posts about cranes, and the last time was 2017! And that year I saw cranes even later. This blog is not a diary, but it feels quite nice to have some notes saved here.
